Let’s talk about Grandpa Bert for a minute. My grandpa was a hard worker. He was creative and resourceful, and loved to make something out of nothing. And, he loved a good bargain. So sometime after WWII he started going to Army surplus sales. For fun here’s a picture of Grandpa on his bike, getting ready to go out hunting. Pictures are courtesy of my cousin Melanie. I’m the keeper of the fabric and sewing stuff, she’s the keeper of the pictures.
And here’s the fabric!
With this Grandma made about everything you can think of. Dresses, shirts, curtains, chair covers, mattress covers, mock up clothes. Yet at the time of her passing, there is still this much left! How big was the roll when Grandpa bought it? Who knows. Now the fabric torch has been passed to me. It’s my family duty to use this fabric, for everything I can think of. I’m sure you’ll be seeing it a lot in my blog, so keep an eye out for it. Now to put some of Grandpa’s creativity, and WWII fabric to use!
Now let’s talk about awkward scrub pants.
For some reason I was short volunteers for this one, hmmmm.. So I volunteered my niece Kira! I decided to leave off the pockets, make the legs a little slimmer, and change the bottom.
First, I had to manhandle this heavy roll of fabric. Please take notice of the at least 77 year old wrinkles in this fabric. I can’t help but think it’s the first time this side of the fabric has seen the sun since Truman was President. But enough history, and more sewing!
I cuffed the bottom and added some black bias tape to not only hide the seam, but to add a design element.
Casual and comfy!
Kira can make anything look cute!
Check out that black peeking out of the bottom cuff!
This was fun to make because I was able to use up some of Grandpa’s fabric. Kira was a good sport and is willing to let me dress her in anything…right Kira?
As for me, onto the next!
That model is a cutie patootie…and the scrub pants are pretty cute too! 🥰
Fantastic!! Love the back story! Love the scrubs! Love the cute model!
Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Cute! Somehow, I totally missed this post!!
