Mia was once again in need of some new things to wear to work, and to just enjoy. So instead of moving through my patterns I skipped around and found this pattern from 1969 that she liked. She liked View 2 so I got to work making sure all of the pieces for this dress were still in the envelope. They were! So off I sew!
This isn’t the first time when working with a vintage pattern that I’ve seen the dart lines cut like this. I don’t do this, I mark them differently. Maybe someone got wild with the tracing wheel? No judgement, I like to see how others have gotten the same patterns made sometime in the past. And sometimes while sewing, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do!
Let’s talk about this fabric. While on vacation in Oregon this summer, Rhonda and I did one of our favorite things, we went second hand shopping! In a second hand store in Coos Bay, I found this, and two other, vintage fabrics. I was thrilled and knew I would find a use for them. To make this dress with the yardage I had, I had to fold up the hem line before I cut the pattern. I needed every bit to get the layout right!
The fabric itself is a type of linen. It is stiff, but not uncomfortably so.
I’ve got my dart all marked and ready to be pinned and sewn.
I had a vintage zipper that matched the colors in the fabric. Imagine that! I’m not surprised that I had a matching zipper, but I was happy about it!
The dress got put in the mail, and off to Georgia it went. As you can see, it looks fabulous on Mia!
She had a friend take her pictures, and they thought all of the green would compliment the dress. They were right.
Mia loves the “Mary Tyler Moore Show”. During the ‘shelter in place’ time of life, she discovered it. She would watch it at home and wish that she was living a life similar to Mary’s on the show. She wanted her own place that she could decorate with the things she loved. She wanted a job that she loved where she could support herself and be independent. She wanted dinner parties with friends. She loved her clothes and fashion. She wanted to be her own version of Mary Tyler Moore, Mia Tyler Moore! HA! Neither one of us realistically thought that this would happen for her any time soon. She couldn’t find any job, anywhere. She didn’t give up though, and applied and applied for jobs. Eventually she was offered her current job at the University Of North Georgia, and all of her Mary Tyler Moore dreams came true!
She has a job that she loves, her own place. She is independent, has dinner parties with her new friends, and of course, can have all of the vintage fashions she wants! She even has a gold “M” on her wall just like Mary had on hers! Mia’s apartment is on the left, Mary’s, of course, is the one on the right.
Channeling Mary Tyler Moore!
Mia just needs a hat to throw in the air!
Another spin shot but this one captures the back of the dress.
The dress was perfect for the office too! She has spunk, but watch out, Mr. Grant hates spunk! HA!
Even when you have no idea how your dreams can happen, keep dreaming! Never give up on the things you want or the life you want. Keep moving forward, the things that are for you will come!
You really are gonna make it after all!
As for me, onto the next!
