In the spirit of never letting an event get past us without an outfit, Michelle picked out this skirt to wear to Grandma Joyce’s 100th birthday party.
As you can see on the pattern front, it was originally from around 1933. I love the classic look of this skirt. Michelle ordered a pretty grey fabric for the skirt to be made out of. I was excited to make it. There were some design elements that are part of this skirt that were new to me.
I got to work laying out the pattern.
The waist of this skirt had some triangular designs to it. The bottom of the skirt had some large, open pleat sections. I was going to have to be precise with the marks for these features.
The bottom pleats had an entire separate piece that needed to be sewn in.
Got both of them sewn in!
The skirt required a lot of top stitching.
Once the pleat pieces were sewn in, I then had to remove the basting stitches to open the pleats.
It was starting to come together.
More top stitching.
I caught some of the seam in the stitching, so it looked wonky. Time to seam rip.
Darts in the back of the skirt.
The skirt has two decorative buttons on it. Michelle chose these antique buttons from my stash.
Sewing them on with some antique thread. Some might say that old thread frays or is falling apart. I’ve found this not to be true at all. If the first layer is dusty or faded, unravel it. The thread underneath is usually still pristine! Old thread was made so much better than thread today.
Sewing the waist band piece.
Sewing selfie.
There was lots of hand stitching to do on the inside of the skirt.
Then time to hem it.
It looked great on Michelle, she was party ready!
I love the way it looked on Michelle, and the style of the skirt.
Even the sun shinning though the window agreed that it was a good skirt!
The 1940’s and 1930’s styles together.
Never fear though, our specific outfits get worn more than once, Michelle wore the skirt again and this time dressed it down with a casual sweater.
This style is amazing on Michelle, I love a classic! I might just have to make this one again, but for myself!
As for me, onto the next!
