Mia wanted a new dress and picked out this pattern for it. She decided to go with View 1. This particular pattern is from 1966.
Mia had a few different fabric options to choose from. She decided to go with this blue and green floral, which just happens to be a vintage sheet! I got to work cutting it out. The pattern as it was, was much too big. I knew I would have to take it in and adjust it.
The tie collar for the view she chose needed to be cut on the bias. This takes up so much fabric but it the only way to get the tie collar to be flexible.
Cutting out the dress back and the neck facing.
Now here’s the thing about making this dress. Right in the middle of making it, Michael had some medical issues that took all of my time and attention. Without going into it, just know he’s okay, and getting better.
As a result of all of this I would sew one little piece at a time, and didn’t take pictures. Michael’s issues concerned Mia so much that she flew home for a week to visit.
I tried to take advantage of Mia being here and tried to finish this dress really quick. We knew Michael was on the mend, and I wanted to fit the dress with her in person.
Here I am sewing up the tie that goes in the front.
One of Grandma’s old zippers was the perfect length. I wish zippers were still that inexpensive.
I got the dress nearly finished, I just needed to adjust it to fit Mia and hem it. Keep in mind, at this time I was physically and mentally exhausted from the recent events with Michael, so again, I got no pictures.
Mia tried the dress on and it looked terrible! Not just that it needed to be adjusted, but it made her look like Vicky Lawrence from “Mama’s Family”. I told Mia I would just set it aside, take some pictures of it using Guinevere, and tell my blog followers that sometimes you miss the mark.
The dress got hung on my sewing room door. Mia went back to Georgia, and I started on something else. My sewing has been really slow going because Michael has had lots of follow up appointments and he did need some taking care of.
So there the dress hung and hung. Michelle and Elizabeth said just save it, David might need it for a movie someday.
As the photo shoot of the dress was approaching, I would look at the dress and think, maybe it would look good on someone else. Maybe it just wasn’t the right dress for Mia. While talking on a group chat on the app, “Marco Polo”, and talking about this dress, my cousin Dana said she didn’t think it was that bad. I told her I would be right over to have her give it a try.
The dress looked amazing on her! I took it home, did the adjustments that it needed to fit her, and hemmed it.
She went out one weekend for the photo shoot, and as you can see for yourself, she doesn’t look like “Mama”, not even a little bit!
Dana loved the dress so much she wore it to a luncheon, where it got rave reviews! Everybody loved it and complimented her. They couldn’t believe it was an old sheet!
I love this picture!
Very vintage vibes in front of the old drug store that still has a lunch counter!
Dana adores her new dress and it looks amazing on her! She’ll be the best dressed anytime she wears it!
I was glad that the dress found it’s rightful owner!
Michael is still healing and getting better every day, but sewing is still slow going. If I need to skip a week or two of blog posts I will. You can always go back and re-read an old favorite.
As for me, onto the next!
You nailed it for Dana! It looks so wonderful on her…like it was made just for her❤️❤️❤️
Who knew that something that looked so terrible on Mia (poor Mia), would look so great on Dana?! It still blows my mind. The dress definitely picked her.
The dress knew it was not for me! It had another owner in mind LOL!
