While shopping I came across this doll in the clearance section. The box was sun faded and torn up. The doll’s hair was askew.
But the price was right! I couldn’t pass up such a deal. Especially with two little girls in the family. There were actually two of these dolls on clearance, both of them equally messed up.
These dolls needed a makeover and a new wardrobe!
I traced the dress the doll came in to make a dress pattern. The paper I used was from an old desk calendar. The pages are bigger and they give me more room to work with. I also use them when I need to alter a pattern and sketch it out.
After I traced the dress I added a seam allowance.
I grabbed some scrap and got to work. It went fast since there are only two pieces to the pattern.
I turned over the sleeve opening to the inside and hemmed it. I did this before joining the sides.
Here’s one dress with the front and back sections sewn together.
I added this ribbon that I had stashed.
For another dress I used this piece of scrap that I was saving. I got this piece from a dress that I had altered for Kira recently.
Hemming the arm hole the same as I did the arm holes on the other dress.
I hemmed the neck the same way. In clothes I make I would never leave a raw edge so exposed, but this is for a doll. I don’t think it will matter too much.
For the back closures I used two little buttons by the neck.
Hemming the bottom of the dress.
Here she is, in her original dress. She got her hair combed and braided for the photo shoot.
I found some inexpensive shoes to go with her outfits.
I have no pictures of the making of this dress. Sometimes I get carried away sewing and forget! Here it is none the less. I used scrap from a previous sew, and paired this dress with some bunny slippers.
The “Kira” dress.
Short but sweet post this week. Sometimes it is what it is!
I made all of the dresses twice. Two little girls will be getting a new doll complete with custom dresses for Easter. I got to use up some scrap which always makes me happy!
As for me, onto the next!
Such a good idea! The dresses turned out super cute! Now two little girls I know are going to have a fun doll with beautiful, custom outfits!
I still have my cabbage patch kids, with custom made outfits that grandma sewed for them! ❤️
So darn cute❣️ Lucky girls❤️
What a wonderful gift I love the dresses ❤️
What a great, creative gift idea! You’re so talented!
Adorable! You say it is what it is, but I say it is very special! I remember my grandma making doll clothes for me and how special that was. The two little girls will love them!
