I’ve talked a lot about my daughter on my blog. I have been sewing out of necessity for her. Also, the majority of my patterns are women’s patterns.
BUT, I have a son too. David, my son, was home from college one weekend and asked me to make him a shirt. Of course I would! He is currently a film major at Sacramento State. I thought a shirt that could be both casual or a little dressy would work best.
I decided to make view B, it has a vintage vibe to it, and David does like vintage things.
Time to sew!
I liked the color choice on the pattern front of view B, but with black being the dominate color.
Laying out the pattern….
While I sew, here’s some rambling.
When I brought Grandma’s patterns home, I knew I had to go through them and organize them. While going through them all and found that she still had (of course) her patterns for square dancing dresses. Grandma and Grandpa were part of a square dancing club, and many of my childhood memories are of going to practice with them. I loved to watch the dresses twirl and was amazed that they knew what to do by whatever the guy on stage was saying. It still amazes me, I did not get their dancing skills!
For fun, here’s a picture of Grandpa and Grandma in one of their square dancing outfits.
I was asked why would I keep the square dancing dress patterns? What would I ever do with a bunch of square dancing dresses? I replied, maybe I would take up square dancing…..OR maybe I would be in a play…OR David will make a movie, and he will need square dancing dresses as part of the plot!
The latter seemed the most likely, so study hard son, and vindicate me with my pattern hoarding!! Is it my low key goal to do the costume designing for him? Yes! Maybe I’ll be the next Edith Head. Go ahead and look her up if you’re not sure who she is, it’s OK. 🙂
I will be making each square dancing outfit as part of this sewing journey, so we will talk about square dancing again! Oh, and I have the patterns for those awesome shirts Grandpa is wearing, so that will be happening too!
Now back to the sew!
Piecing the front facings together. I was really liking these colors together.
And DONE!
Of course we needed a place for pictures that had the same vintage feel as his shirt. Down to our local frosty stand we went! (Aunt Tamy’s favorite burger joint, and Grandma’s lunch stop when she would come to town.<3)
Looking good, David!!
I love this picture, it will be the one I show everyone when he wins an Oscar. (You know, for the movie that has square dancing in it, ha-ha)
The weekend was over and back to college David went, and with him a new shirt.
I hope when he wears it he feels inspired and creative. I hope, for my own selfish and silly reasons, he considers writing a script with a square dancing scene in it!
As for me, onto the next!
Love it! And I love that Butch’s never left…..it’s my favorite lunch spot too!
Brilliant shirt & cool model! 😎 Les would die for that shirt, he loves that style & would like a part in David’s film wearing one as an extra! So David, for your Mum, make that square dancing movie!
