Since I have several vintage maternity patterns in my collection, and a pregnant cousin, I was back to work on maternity clothes! Marisa picked out this 1970’s dress. I sent Michelle to pick out fabric, and got started!
This pattern was pretty small, so I knew I would have to up size the pattern to fit. Do I know what I’m doing? Kind of. Here’s me in an action shot, up sizing the pattern! HA!
I didn’t want to mess with the neckline, so I opted to add inches to the sides. I would also have to add the same amount to the skirt attachment. Is this the correct way? No, but it works. I’ve watched videos on YouTube showing how to properly up size patterns. My two takeaways are; I’m not formally trained, and “ain’t nobody got time for that”!
Laying out the contrast fabric that is around the neck.
Both pieces cut out, and fusible interfacing in place!
The left side is sewn, and the right side is pinned and getting ready to be sewn.
The front of the bodice crosses so I hand stitched it in place on the inside.
Something else happened on this sew! Michael decided to teach himself how to do upholstery. So now I’m sharing a sewing room with him. He’s practicing his stitching and getting used to his machine. Side note, yes, I do need all of that thread! HA!
Top stitching the neckline.
Now I’m attaching the skirt to the bodice. You can see my gathering stitches.
Sleeve prep!
The sleeves have a contrasting cuff on them, so I’m working on that part of the sleeve.
Sewing cuff to sleeve.
Done, now I’ve got to flip it the right way…..
….and top stitch it into place.
Sewing on the sleeves.
The pattern calls for decorative trim. I just so happened to have just enough of this vintage trim. It has a hint of gold in it, which matches well with the dress.
How did I just happen to have this? Grandma Doris of course! I’m sure she would be very happy to see it get put to use, and doubly happy that it’s on a maternity outfit. She would be very happy to be getting a new great grand-baby!
And here it is, all finished for Marisa and baby!
For some reason the neckline sticks up. I wasn’t happy about it, but Marisa looks great anyways!
Looking cute while enjoying her beautiful view and the fresh mountain air!
We all can’t wait for the baby to be here, but for the sake of the crafters in the famliy, he can take his time!
You win some and you lose some. From a sewing perspective I consider this dress a loss. From the perspective of experience, the blessing of a new baby, and Marisa making anything look good, it’s a win! Either way I’ll keep on keeping on. Challenge yourself to learn or do something you’ve always wanted to do, it’s never too late!
As for me, I’m onto the next!
She looks beautiful and so happy 🥰
Well, I’m kind of with you, not my favorite sew, but Marisa does make anything look good❤️.
I don’t think you should give up on that original pattern. I think you should make one like the red white and blue on the pattern packaging, for Felna. I bet it will turn out cute.
I like the dress! It looks great on Marisa! The collar up gives it a unique look and I like it! Keep up the great work!
Great look for Marisa!
Very comfortable dress ❤️
Very cute and looks comfy too!! 💙💙
I think it’s cute, mom and baby look comfortable in that dress! I like the color!
Pretty Marisa❣️
