Lots of changes were happening this summer in a very short time. Mia got a new job at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. This meant driving to Georgia, packing her up, and moving her back to California in record time! Since she was starting a new job, she needed some new work clothes!
She picked out this pattern from 1969, some linen fabric that we found on clearance, and I got to work!
When I lay out a pattern, I never start cutting until I’m sure all of the pieces fit the right way.
I’m glad that’s my habit because the skirt on this dress needed to have the fabric for it cut only after opening the fabric and refolding it! I had to then make the lower bodice piece and the sleeve fit on the remnants.
So if you noticed on the pattern envelope, the front of the dress has a unique triangle shape in the bodice front. Here it is laid out but not sewn yet.
With the pieces sewn it looked like this.
BUT I had to seam rip one piece off because that wasn’t the sewing order. The trouble I get myself into by not following the instructions.
What do I expect though, this is literally me almost every sew!
*Side note, I made this meme. Sewing memes are hard to come by, so I have an app and try to create my own content that I share on SewingWithGrandma.com’s Facebook page.
Now that I was reading the directions, the dress went together easily.
Basting a pleat.
Sewing on the zipper.
Prepping the neck facing. I always cut it longer than the pattern calls for. I can always cut off the excess later, but it allows me to be able to fold it under and sew it down in the back by the zipper easier.
And just as fast as Mia moves around the country, her dress was done!
The vintage pattern looks great on her!
California girls, “the cutest girls in the world.”….the Beach Boys had it right! HA!
I’m excited for Mia’s new adventure, and so is she! I’m proud of her for chasing her dreams, and not being afraid of change, or trying something new. Life is change, embrace it! Patterns come with instructions, I need to embrace that! HA!
More new job fashions to come!!
As for me, onto the next!
I love the fabric for this one – and I love that Mia is back in California!

So cute…..daughter and dress! She looks ready for anything!
Painting the roses red, we’re painting the roses red! I hope she wears it to Disneyland one day because it gives off low key Alice in Wonderland vibes.
As usual, absolutely adorable! This style is very flattering on Mis, and I love the print. I agree with Elizabeth, I immediately thought of painting the roses red too 🌹❤️❤️❤️ All my love for Mia’s new adventure ❤️❤️❤️
