My grandma once told me that I take after grandpa’s mom because I love to sew and quilt. I know that my interest in sewing began as a little girl watching her sew. She once made my hand-me-down dress that was once my sister’s longer by adding a ruffle. That was magic to little me! When I was older and would visit her she would take me upstairs to her sewing room and show me fabric she had, or things she had made. She taught me how to hide my knots when hand quilting. I would spend summers with her as a little girl and always slept under an old homemade quilt. The quilts all fascinated me, the colors and shapes on the quilts, and they way the little scraps came together to make something beautiful. My love of quilts was born by my time spent with her
It was later in life that I realized our resemblance. She said she always thought I looked like her, so I’m convinced that her vintage hats look just as fabulous on me as they did her.
April 25, 2021 she passed away.
I inherited her sewing things, patterns, notions, gadgets. Between her patterns and mine, I now have over 500 patterns. What will I ever do with all of these patterns? Sew them of course! I’ve decided to embark on a sewing challenge, making each pattern in my now incredibly large collection. I’ll be walking in grandma’s sewing foot steps, so to speak. I asked family and friends to help me by being my models. The rule is: if I make you the outfit you have to agree to model if for my blog.
I will also be featuring fun sewing side projects and stories.
For me this is a fun way to use what I have -a trait I got from my grandparents- while honoring my grandma and the impact she had on my life. Sewing with grandma helps me to to feel close to her still.
I’m honored to resemble my grandma, Doris May Ricks Johnson.
I’m honored that I can catch a glimpse of her when I look in the mirror and smile.
I’m honored that she was my grandma.
So welcome to my sewing adventure, as I sew with grandma!
