I decided on a dress to make to wear to Sydney’s wedding. You haven’t missed that post, it will be coming next week. The dress is from 1965, so I thought this pill box hat pattern would be a perfect addition to my wedding guest outfit. And like I’ve said before, I never pass up an opportunity to wear a hat!
I cut the pattern pieces out and decided to quickly wrap it around my head to make sure it would fit. Yes, I could have measured, but then I would not have this fun picture of myself.
Just a typical day in my sewing room, no big deal.
I cut the pattern out in two different colors, a cream color, and this brown that matches my dress. The brown side would be the liner of the hat.
The pattern called for some pretty stiff interfacing. I did not have any, then I remembered a bag of scrap interfacing that I had of Grandma’s! She had a perfect piece for my project!
Pinning the interfacing in place.
Stitching it all together.
Sewing in the liner. It was all going together good.
To iron down the inside of the seams in the hat, I got my mini iron out. I did not think this was a weird thing to own, and I’ve had it for many years. My cousin Elizabeth, and think tank member, was surprised and amused that I owned this little iron. She still keeps laughing about it, and saying, “Of course YOU have a little iron.”
How else to you iron little seams? Mini iron, weird and rare? Or Elizabeth, weird and easily amused? HA-HA!
I added this grosgrain ribbon to finish it off. It goes on the inside and works as a hat band.
I imagined myself looking like Jackie Kennedy Onassis in my pill box hat. So fashionable and fun, but instead….
…I looked like a Shriner! Which is not bad, but was not the look I was going for with this project!
It is also a little like the “Hot Dog On A Stick” hats.
I decided that the hat looked great atop Guinevere. She can wear it until I find another use for it. I’ll have to find another hat to wear for the wedding.
So, I made a hat, and it was a flop. You win some and you lose some. I guess some of the patterns I get to just are not going to turn out, and that’s OK, it’s all part of the experience. I had so much more sewing to do to prepare for Sydney’s wedding!
SO definitely, onto the next!
Is that all there is to that hat? Pattern didn’t call for some sort of embellish? Well looks good on Guinevere! You’ll stumble on a great hat pattern in the future!
Mad Hatter comes to mind Nicole!! 😂 …… I too have a wee iron like that! Used it when making masks, perfect for diddy seams 👌 Don’t give up on the hats, great 1st try, what about using a felt material?
Never in my life have I seen such a little iron! Also, I think the hat isn’t that bad. It’s definitely not for Sydney’s wedding, but maybe a future costume?
I can’t believe you even made the hat….oh yes l can because you can make anything my friend! I love the vintage era! Your so awesome and talented!
