“Advice From A Strawberry; Blossom where you’re planted. Be tasteful. Drink in the sunshine. Keep close to the earth. Savor life’s sweetness. Let good ideas ripen. Jam with your friends!”~Ilan Shamir
I was deep in the Christmas crafting season and I wanted to make an apron for Mia. She loves to bake, especially experimenting with the old recipes that belonged to Sophrona (her great-great Grandmother). I decided (with Kira’s help) to make this apron from 1959. I had lots of this super sweet looking strawberry fabric that I thought would be perfect!
Since I was trying to sew quickly, I neglected to get pictures of cutting out the pattern. Here, however is the first important step. Prepping the pocket. You can see on the pattern directions, and the picture on the front of the pattern envelope, that this apron has a long pocket across the front. It is divided into three sections.
I had this green rick rack which matched the green leaves and stems on the fabric. I do love the vintage look that rick rack gives things, and this was perfect! Thanks Grandma Doris! (It, of course, came from her stash.)
Once the rick rack was sewn onto the top of the pocket it was time to pin the pocket onto the front of the apron and sew it into place.
I then had to sew the pocket so it would have three separate pockets. I marked the sewing lines carefully with my blue tailors chalk.
I prepped the front ties. The pattern called for the ties to be hemmed on the top and bottom, and a pleat put into them where they connected to the front of the apron. The raw, pleated edge was put into a “tuck” on the either side and sewn in.
I prepped the neck facing and sewed it in. I then prepped the armhole facings, and sewed them in as well.
Neck and arm facings sewn in. I attached more rick rack around the neck and the armholes.
The apron has one button closure which is located on the back by the neck. Sewing the buttonhole.
I chose this one beautiful button that I found in a button tin. Sewing it into place.
Then the apron got wrapped and put under the Christmas tree.
On Christmas morning Mia was delighted with her new apron! Here she is in her kitchen showing it off. It matches her decor so well!
Pretending to bake, no worries though, she’ll really bake in it plenty! The apron also goes great with that vintage Pyrex!
Functional pockets are always a plus!
A cute apron that also goes great with my Mia Strawberry!
I feel like I was able to keep a vintage feel with this sew. I love the way it turned out. The rick rack really set off the whole look!
Homemade gifts are my favorite things to give!
As for me, onto the next!
