“Directly in front of [Father Wolf], holding on by a low branch, stood a naked brown baby who could just walk-as soft and as dimpled a little atom as ever came to a wolf’s cave at night.”~Rudyard Kipling
I have become rich in babies! Russell and Marisa welcomed their second son, Byron Henry, on their first son, Bert Holliday’s, first birthday! Whew! I’m tired just thinking about it! On the other side of the family, Zachary and Kiauna welcomed their first baby, Emerson Noelle, a few day before. With babies on my mind I decided to dive into some baby sews!
Now that Bert was a big brother, I figured it would be nice to make him something. I chose this romper from 1970, this fabric that I had in my stash, and went to work!
If you notice on the above picture, it says the size is 1/2. I had no idea what that would be comparable to, or what Bert’s measurements were. I had recently held and played with him. I knew that he was wearing a modern size 18 months. I decided to add a little bit of wiggle room to this pattern. I added 1/2 of an inch to both the front, and the back seams of the romper.
You can see my slight adjustment to make it bigger below. I had another problem though. This pattern has a seam up the front, and this fabric had a pattern that I wanted to line up. Instead of cutting through a folded piece of fabric to get both front pieces, I cut them one at a time. I had to take into consideration the seam allowance. Fingers crossed that I can get the design to line up!
Because I was so particular with the front design, and trying to get it to line up, I only had a little bit of fabric left for the back pieces. There was no way I would be able match up the design in the back.
I cut it out and added 1/2 an inch to these pattern pieces as well.
I had once used some of this fabric to make a disney themed quilt. I had some scrap that were two inch strips. They were perfect for the side tabs of the romper.
I got the front pieces sewn together and lined up pretty good! It’s not 100% but it’s pretty darn close! I pinned on the side tabs to the front so I could baste them into place.
Whoops! I added one inch to the front facing in the middle to accommodate for the 1/2 inch I added onto the front pieces. For some reason the sides of the front facing were still a little short. I wasn’t too worried, I figured they would be in the seam allowance and not show.
I flipped the back and front facing and pinned it along with the side seams.
I pinned the crotch together preparing to sew that next.
Measuring and ironing the hem before sewing them.
Time for button holes!
I found some coordinating blue buttons for the shoulders and side tabs, and sewed them into place.
The romper was finished!
This fabric was so cute that I decided to fussy cut the design, and applique it onto a onesie for baby Byron.
Romper and onesie were finished. The onesie is sized 0-3 months, and the romper looks like it’s the same size. Well if the romper doesn’t fit Bert then Byron can grow into it!
I got both romper and onesie delivered to the babies, but it was such a busy day I didn’t get a chance to try them on. That’s ok though, I’m sure they’ll look adorable on whoever they fit. As you can imagine, it’s quite a busy house with two beautiful babies in it!
Here’s the newly expanded family! I love each and every one of them so much!
Being rich in babies means more cute sews, but more importantly, more people to love!
As for me, onto the next!
Very cute! ❤️
Love that print! You are so lucky to have babies to love!!
