Halloween was quickly approaching and although I have a lot of costume patterns, I had not planned on dressing up this year. I’ve been subbing at the Elementary school lately, and was asked to work on Halloween day. I needed a costume fast. Then some co-workers told me they would be dressing up like cats. Michael had the great idea for me to dress up like a “crazy cat lady” to accompany the cat co-workers!
I remembered that I had some “crazy cat lady” novelty fabric, so I got to work real fast! Halloween was only two days away!
I chose this skirt pattern from 1978 for a couple of reasons. First, it had pockets. Second, it says “quick and easy” on the pattern envelope. That was the type of pattern I needed!
The skirt consisted of this one piece that you cut out twice on the fold. The problem I had was that the pocket side ran out of fabric! As you can see I had it already pinned up to the length I wanted, plus seam allowance to make sure I would have enough fabric to cut the pattern twice.
As for the pocket coming up short, I pinned scrap to it with the right sides together. I didn’t care if the selvage edge was still there. It would be on the inside of the pocket and not seen.
I did this to all of the pockets, then cut the pattern. It made up the difference easy enough! I pinned the sides together and got ready to sew it together.
After the seams were complete I started measuring and ironing out my waist casing for the elastic.
Once the elastic was run through the waist band, all that was left to do was to hem the bottom….
….and hustle to school for Halloween!
I only got the one picture because the day was chaos, as you can imagine! I think the skirt turned out cute, and I will probably wear it again. Well, maybe without the “crazy” and just the “cat lady”.
It was a fun day though, and I was glad for my quick sewing skills!
