“I paint my own reality.”~Frida Kahlo
Kira has been away at college, and in her down time she looked through my pattern collection. I have all of my patterns on an app, and can share access to them with anyone who wants to look at them. She saw this bag pattern, and asked if I would make her one. Of course!
When I made the “mystery dress” for Mia, Kira got nervous and said, not to surprise her with a mystery outfit. She’d be nervous! LOL! Here’s the post for “The Mystery Dress”, in case you missed it.
With this bag, she said I could use any fabric I wanted. She said to surprise her!
I’ve had this fun Frida Khalo fabric in my collection for a while. I had to have it and wasn’t sure what I would use it for. It would be perfect for Kira and her style.
The bag had only two pieces to cut out, plus a liner. For the liner I decided to use scrap muslin that was leftover from the apron I had previously made.
In case you missed it…

There is also an amazing documentary about her on PBS called “Becoming Frida Kahlo”. I’ve watched it and would definitely recommend it.
The pattern called for the use of interfacing. I ironed it on and got to work sewing the pieces together.
With the liner basted in place, I sewed it to the bag’s outside. I used my pinking shears to cut off the excess fabric. I then used an additional zig zag stitch so it wouldn’t fray.
The inside of the bag. I used the Frida fabric for the bottom. I put some velcro in so Kira will be able to close the bag when she carries it.
Just like that, it was finished!
Kira loved the fabric that I chose for her bag! She got her new bag and sent this selfie! Getting ready to take it out and about!
I love being able to give a custom gift. This bag suited Kira so well! I’m sure she’ll get lots of use out of it, and lots of compliments about it when she does!
As for me, onto the next!
