“Do anything, but let it produce joy.”~Walt Whitman
Last week I mentioned that I made a clutch purse to go along with my dress. Here’s how I did it!
First, I looked for free patterns online. I then used paper to cut out templates.
You need 2-10in. X 6in. pieces for the body ( and 2 of that size for the liner), 2-11in X 5in. pieces for the bow, 11-14.5 X 3.5 piece for the strap, and 1- 2in. X 5in. piece for the bow knot. Last, but not least, you will need a 9 in. zipper.
With the templates, it’s easier to just lay the pattern down on whatever scrap you’re working with.
Laying out the bow.
Then the body.
Because it was scrap I had to piece some of it together for the liner, but that’s ok!
You then iron the body pieces and back pieces with 1/2in folded over.
I pinned the bow onto the front, and basted it on.
I laid the first piece of the liner, folded edge against the back side of the zipper. Pinned it, and sewed it. The zipper is long but because it’s plastic I can cut it to the size I need. You can see in this picture how the pieced lining turned out.
Then I sewed the second piece of liner to the other side of the zipper.
I then turned it over and pinned the front to the right side of the zipper.
You then do the same thing, sew it and flip it. Confused? Here’s the link to the tutorial I found.
I enjoyed making the clutch so I decided to make one using a faux suede piece that Kira had gotten out of her Grandma Ann’s things.
Because it is faux suede I couldn’t use pins. Luckily Marisa had just given me a random box of vintage sewing things. Inside of it were these aluminum hem clips. They worked perfectly!
This is how it turned out!
Then I thought, I do have these little vinyl rolls that I had bought on clearance. So I tried it out, and they made a cute clutch too! I had to make the bow out of fabric, or it would be too stiff to flip.
Then I made another one with some scrap from a dress I had made for Mia!
To check that dress out, revisit this previous post!
Then I decided to make, yet another from scrap I was saving.
Which of course matches Mia’s “Mia Tyler Moore” dress!
Included was a special tag inside.
Back to the first clutch. It fits perfectly on the seat next to me when I drive!
Sometimes I like to take a break from the traditional patterns. These were lots of fun to make, I’ve decided to try to make matching clutches for all of the things make! I also really like using up any scraps that I have!
This simple project brought me lots of joy! I hope it brings you joy to see as well!
As for me, onto the next!
Love this dress, the matching clutch, and the car. I especially love the green “Mary Tyler Moore” clutch. How fun to make these for all future dresses!
These are so cute!
My goodness your sewing is amazing, I love the style of the Polka dotted dress and the black clutch with the bow. I still use my crossbody bag, makes it easier to carry the notes and bandages while on the yard. Thank you so much, I appreciate it.
So cute! Perfect for you – always matching accessories to your outfits! 💙
I have an almost identical clutch, in cream leather with a black bow that I bought for a wedding outfit and I love it, as I do with those you made to match the outfits, well done !!
The clutches are fun. I did sew along with the pillowcases. Maybe one day I’ll get brave enough to sew along with this tutorial.
You can do it!
These are so cute, and stylish ❤️ The fact that you can make them out of scraps adds to their desirability. You could match or coordinate them with anything you make. I think one out of denim would be cute too❤️❤️❤️
That’s a great idea!
These are so cute! 🥰
Wow!! I Love the dress and the clutch purse! You look so cute in that dress!
